How were the selected BASE Study buildings evaluated?

The field work to collect the data on the IAQ-related parameters in each building was done over a one-week period in either summer or winter. Each selected building was physically characterized in terms of location, physical structure, ventilation, occupant activities, and potential indoor and outdoor pollutant sources through visual observations throughout the entire building, building staff interviews, and review of building related-documents.

Resource restrictions and the potential for increased burden on the building occupants necessitated that only representative sampling spaces in each building were intensively characterized. The “test space” (also referred to as the study space) was selected in each building using the established criteria (see Criteria for Designating a BASE Building Space as a Study Area (PDF) - www.epa.gov/iaq/base/pdfs/criteria_for_designating_a_building_space.pdf ).

Within each test space and outdoors near the building air intake, environmental measurements were taken.

In tandem with these measurements, an occupant questionnaire developed by EPA and the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) was administered to building occupants in the test space to obtain information on their perceptions of their workplace, health and well being, workplace conditions and characteristics of their job.
